Glenn Leonard: Biography
Hailing from Washington, DC, Glenn Leonard demonstrated his musical talent early, forming three successful groups by his twenties: The Chancellors, The Instant Groove, and The True Reflections. He also contributed to the acclaimed Washington-based group, The Unifics. Leonard's journey in music began with his first recording alongside The Chancellors under Cap City Records, followed by another significant recording with The True Reflection on Atlantic Records.
In 1975, Glenn Leonard captured the attention of the legendary Temptations, who were searching for a new lead singer. Joining the group as the first tenor and lead vocalist, Leonard enjoyed an illustrious career with them from 1975 to 1983. During this time, he sang on 10 albums and appeared on numerous international television specials. Leonard's signature songs include I’m on Fire, Go for It, The Best of Both Worlds, Eyes, Ever Ready Love, and the iconic Christmas classic Silent Night from the group’s esteemed holiday album.
A highlight of Leonard's time with the Temptations was the "Reunion" project, where he performed and recorded alongside celebrated members such as Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards, Richard Street, Otis Williams, and the legendary bass singer Melvin Franklin. (Melvin Jr. began performing with Glenn Leonard's Temptations Revue in 2024, carrying on the family legacy with his talented bass voice.)
In 1984, Leonard left the Temptations to embrace a new calling as a born-again Christian. By 1986, he entered full-time ministry and became licensed, later earning ordination and a doctorate in the early 1990s.
In 2002, Leonard brought together former Temptations members to honor their shared history and connect with fans. This rotating all-star lineup included Damon Harris, Ali Woodson, Barrington Henderson, GC Cameron, and the late Ray Davis and Harry Barry. Notably, Joe Herndon, a standout in Leonard’s group, was selected to join the Temptations as their bass singer.
Today, Glenn Leonard continues to perform alongside his handpicked ensemble of seasoned vocalists, each with extensive experience working with Leonard and other prominent recording groups. Together, they’ve garnered acclaim worldwide for their exceptional vocal talent, engaging stage presence, and charm off-stage.
Glenn Leonard resides in Washington, DC, and was inducted into the R&B Music Hall of Fame in 2013. With his group, Glenn Leonard’s Temptations Revue, and in partnership with Mark Sonder Productions Entertainment Agency, Leonard delivers the timeless sound and spirit of Motown’s greatest group.
